At one time, half the general practices in Scotland were using his Woodside child health record. In 1975, Hamish Barber produced a textbook entitled General Practice Medicine, with contributions from members of the department and others. In order to stimulate research by general practitioners he also built a portfolio of clinical trials funded by pharmaceutical companies, which supported part-time research appointments for service general practitioners. In 1977, the department organised the annual meeting of the then AUTGP.
This generated opposition among local general practitioners and, despite protracted negotiation, contributed to a parting of the ways between O’Dowd and UCC. Lessons were learned and in 1997 Colin Bradley was successfully appointed to the foundation chair in general practice. Students now visit practices in year two once a month for basic skills training and have three-week attachments in year three and four weeks in year five. General practice now features in the final clinical examination. There are teaching links with over 100 practices in the Munster area and a research project has compared hospital and general practice teaching.
